Save a Snapchat Story before it's gone
A Snapchat Story downloader saves the snaps in a public Story to your own device so you can watch them after Snapchat removes them. Most Stories vanish 24 hours after they're posted, and Snapchat only lets you keep your own. YellowDown reads the Story's public link and gives you every snap it contains as a separate file, without asking you to log in.
The kinds of Snapchat Stories you can save
"Story" means several different things on Snapchat, and they don't all behave the same way. Here's what each one is and whether YellowDown can save it.
| Story type | How long it stays | Can you save it here? |
|---|---|---|
| Public Story | 24 hours | Yes, while it's live |
| Public profile Story (creators and businesses) | 24 hours | Yes, while it's live |
| Story Highlight (saved to a public profile) | Until the creator deletes it | Yes |
| Friends-only Story | 24 hours | No, it has no public link |
| Private or custom Story | 24 hours | No, it's limited to chosen people |
Looking for a single Spotlight clip rather than a Story? Use the Snapchat video downloader instead. It's tuned for one video at a time.
Where to find a Story link
Everything starts with the right link. A link that points to a person's profile or a single snap can give different results from a link to the whole Story, so it helps to know where to copy it.
In the Snapchat app
Open the creator's public profile and tap their Story or one of their Highlights. While it plays, tap the three-dot menu or the Share arrow, then choose Copy Link. The link is now on your clipboard.
On the web
Many public profiles can also be opened at snapchat.com in a browser. Open the Story there and copy the address from the address bar, or use the page's Share button if it has one.
From a message or another app
If someone sent you a Story link in WhatsApp, Instagram or a text message, press and hold the link and choose Copy. Short links that start with t.snapchat.com work too, because they're expanded before the Story is read.
Download a Snapchat Story in three steps
- Copy the Story linkUse Copy Link from the Story or Highlight, as described above.
- Paste it and press DownloadPut the link in the box at the top of this page. YellowDown looks up the public Story and collects the snaps inside it.
- Pick what to keepEach snap appears as a small preview with its own Download button. Save all of them, or only the moments you care about.
What you get after downloading
A single Story is often a mix of short clips and photos posted over a day. Instead of one long file, YellowDown keeps them as separate snaps, in the order they appear on Snapchat. That makes them easier to share, trim or archive later.
- Video snaps are saved as MP4 files with their original sound, which play on any phone or computer.
- Photo snaps are saved as JPG images (occasionally PNG or WebP, depending on how Snapchat stored them).
- Captions, stickers and drawings that the creator added are kept, because they're part of the published snap.
- File names include the date and a short code, so snaps from the same Story stay together in your downloads folder.
Good reasons to save a Story
People use a Story downloader for everyday, legitimate reasons. A few of the most common:
- Backing up your own Story. If you posted publicly but forgot to turn on auto-save to Memories, you can still keep a copy while it's live.
- Keeping event memories. A friend's public Story from a wedding, trip or concert can be saved, with their permission, before it expires.
- Creator workflows. Creators often download their own Stories to repost on other platforms or to build a highlight reel.
- Watching later. Save a long Story to watch offline on a flight or with weak signal, instead of racing the 24-hour clock.
When a Story won't download
"No snaps found"
The Story has most likely expired, was deleted, or was never public. Open the link in a private browser window. If you can't see the Story without logging in, it isn't public and can't be saved.
Only some snaps appear
Creators can delete individual snaps from a Story at any time, and snaps posted more than 24 hours ago drop off. What you see is what's still live on Snapchat right now.
The video plays instead of saving on iPhone
Use the Download button under the preview rather than the video itself. Safari will ask whether to download the file. Afterwards, open the Files app, find the video in Downloads and choose Save Video to move it into Photos.
The link was copied from a profile, not a Story
Open the Story itself before copying. A profile link may return only the newest snap or nothing at all.
Respect the people behind the Story
A Story is often personal, even when it's public. Saving one for yourself is very different from posting it somewhere else. Don't re-upload someone's Story, remove their name from it or use it to embarrass them. If you want to reuse it, ask first. Creators who find their content shared without permission can contact us through the details on our Terms and Conditions page.
Snapchat Story downloader FAQs
Can I download a Snapchat Story after 24 hours?
Only if the creator saved it to a public Highlight. Regular public Stories are removed by Snapchat after 24 hours, and once a snap is gone from Snapchat it cannot be downloaded.
Will the person know I saved their Story?
YellowDown fetches the public link without signing in to any Snapchat account, so the download is not tied to your profile and Snapchat does not send a save or screenshot alert.
Does it download the whole Story or one snap?
When the link points to a full Story, YellowDown lists every snap it can find. Each one has its own Download button, so you can save all of them or just the ones you want.
Can I save photos from a Story, not just videos?
Yes. Photo snaps are saved as image files and video snaps as MP4 files.
Can I download a private Story or a friend's Story?
No. Private Stories and friends-only Stories have no public link, so no website can download them.
Is the sound included in downloaded Story videos?
Yes. Video snaps are saved with the audio that was published with them.
I forgot to save my own Story to Memories. Can I still get it?
If your Story was public and is still live, copy its link and paste it here to save a copy before it expires.
Does the Snapchat Story downloader cost anything?
No. It is free, with no account and no app to install.
In short
